70 - 80's

We came back from Malta in 1970 and Dad was due to finish his time in the RAF. Mum had had enough of moving around now and decided to settle down in Doncaster, so she had her first 'own' house there. Our time in Doncaster was going to be short lived as by 1973 we were off again! Dad had come out of the RAF and as he was still too young to officially retire he got a job up North in a place called Guisborough in Cleveland. So for the next Ten years or so, Guisborough and Saltburn-by-the-sea was home for Mum. Around 1974 Mum had her own cafe in Saltburn called Brendas Cafe. It was only a small place but very popular with the local people and the many visitors that came to Saltburn during the summer months. I worked in the cafe with Mum too and these are some of the most happy memories I have. Our work time was so much fun (hard work) but fun! We had so many friends and Mum would often go off doing other things leaving me in charge. Mum and Dad had divorced by 1978 and although this was a very difficult time, Mum being the strong person she was starting to build a new life for herself. I suppose as Dad had been her first and only 'love', now she was single, Mum was going to make the most of it. Sometimes it felt like role reversal and I was the one looking out for her! Dancing! Mum loved to dance and she would do this two to three times a week. What ever came along Mum would give it a go.
